This forum allows full review and discussion of a patient’s diagnosis and management plan with all relevant specialists, including pathologists, radiologists, surgeons and radiation oncologists. For specialised treatment 
and care

Dr Michelle Morris graduated from the University of Queensland in 1994 and underwent training in Medical Oncology at the Royal Brisbane Hospital and Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane. She also completed further studies to obtain a Masters in Public Health from the University of Queensland. 

Dr Morris worked as a Medical Oncologist for Cancer Research UK in Leeds, before returning to Australia in 2005 to take up a consultant position at Nambour General Hospital.  Since then, she has consulted at Nambour General Hospital, Gympie Hospital and currently holds a Staff Specialist position at the Sunshine Coast University Hospital.  She has worked in private practice on the Sunshine Coast since 2007, and relocated her practice to Birtinya in 2014.  

Dr Morris has experience in treating a broad range of solid tumour malignancies, with areas of interest including breast cancer, melanoma, gynaecological and urological malignancies. She has been active in improving cancer clinical trial access for both public and private patients on the Sunshine Coast and promoting quality, multidisciplinary care.

Dr Jeremy Long graduated from the University of the Witwatersrand in South Africa in 1985.

After 2 years in the Military as a Lieutenant, he specialised as a general physician and received his Fellow of College of Physicians in 1992 and qualified as a specialist Haemato-Oncologist in 1994.  He continued to work as a Specialist in South Africa until 1996, and then emigrated to New Zealand where he worked at Auckland Hospital, then Waikato Hospital and in 1999 received his FRACP (Medical Oncology).

Dr Long was Director of the Regional Cancer Centre for the Waikato District Health Board in New Zealand from 2002 to 2008.
He arrived in in Nambour in 2008 and then, following Dr Michelle Morris, became the Director of Cancer Care Services for the Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service from 2010 to 2020.

Dr Long is an active member of Multi-Disciplinary Teams (MDT) groups including; Lung, Urology, Breast at Sunshine Coast University Hospital (SCUH) and the Breast MDT at Buderim Private and General MDT at Sunshine Coast University Private Hospital (SCUPH).

His special interests include lung cancer, urological cancers and breast cancer.

Dr Alessandra Francesconi completed her training in Medical Oncology in Brazil in early 2007. Committed to improving her knowledge and to gaining experience she came to Australia to work as a Clinical Research Fellow at Royal Brisbane Hospital. After almost 3 years working at RBWH she decided to stay in Australia permanently and completed further training at the Gold Coast and Mater Hospitals and gained qualification with the Royal Australasian College of Physicians as a fully qualified Medical Oncologist for the second time. She also has been granted a Specialist Certificate in Clinical Research - Oncology, through the University of Melbourne.
 
Dr Francesconi has experience in treating a broad range of solid tumours with special interests in Gastrointestinal and  brain tumours.

Dr Francesconi is committed to delivering a high standard of treatment to her patients, utilising up-to-date advances in Oncology practice. She participates actively in national and international conferences, multidisciplinary tumour team meetings and cancer clinical trials.

A/Professor Bryan Chan

Associate Professor Bryan Chan graduated with a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery with first class honours and the University Medal from the University of Queensland (UQ) in 2007. Prior to that he worked as a Pharmacist after graduating with a Bachelor of Pharmacy with first class honours from UQ in 2001.

Following his post-graduate Medical Oncology training across tertiary hospitals in Queensland, he was awarded Fellowship with the Royal Australasian College of Physicians in 2014. Dr Chan then completed a 2-year clinical and research fellowship with the University of Toronto and the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre in Toronto, Canada. Whilst there, he was also Chief Fellow, providing advocacy and oversight for over 60 international oncology and haematology fellows.

In 2017, he returned to Queensland and joined the team at the Sunshine Coast University Hospital, where he is the lead for both Thoracic Oncology and Research. As an Associate Professor with the Griffith University and Senior Lecturer for UQ, he has a strong passion for teaching and research. In 2019, he obtained his Master of Medicine in Clinical Epidemiology with the University of Sydney. A/Prof Chan enjoys teaching medical students, mentoring registrars and supervising post-graduate scholars. In 2021 he joined the team at Coastal Cancer Care and consults at the Sunshine Coast University Private Hospital.

A/Prof Chan has multiple peer-reviewed journal publications, has co-authored General Practitioner education modules, and is regularly invited to speak at meetings and conferences. He was honoured to be the convenor for the Clinical Oncology Society of Australia (COSA) annual scientific meeting in 2020 and sits on multiple National and Statewide committees that generate and guide evidence-based oncology practice. Dr Chan is heavily involved in Cancer Multi-disciplinary Team (MDT) meetings and in continuing medical education to ensure that his patients get access to the latest information and optimal therapies available.

A/Prof Chan sub-specialises in thoracic, gastrointestinal and endocrine malignancies. As an active Principal Investigator for clinical trials, he collaborates with both international and national groups to attract cutting-edge oncology trials to the Sunshine Coast. He is passionate about combining his strong academic and research focus with his compassionate and thorough patient care approach. A/Prof Chan looks forward to partnering with you and your loved ones to create an individualised oncology treatment plan.

Dr Greg Orchard is a clinical haematologist consulting at Coastal Cancer Care, Sunshine Coast University Private Hospital in addition to his appointment at Sunshine Coast University Hospital
.
He has a broad interest in malignant and non-malignant haematologic disease including myeloma, lymphoma, leukaemia, myeloproliferative disorders, myelodysplastic syndromes, red blood cell, white blood cell, platelet and thrombotic disorders.

Dr Orchard graduated from the University of Queensland with
a Bachelor of Pharmacy in 2000. After several years working in hospital and community pharmacy, he returned to the University of Queensland to complete a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery with Honours in 2009.
Dr Orchard completed his physician training at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital and advanced Haematology training at the Mater Hospital and the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital. He also undertook laboratory training at Sullivan Nicolaides Pathology in addition to reporting for QML Pathology.

Dr Orchard is committed to providing a comprehensive level of care focusing on current best practice and tailoring this to accommodate individual wishes of patients.

Dr Andrew Schmidt is a medical oncologist experienced in treating a broad range of cancer types.  His personable and thorough approach to patient care is complemented by significant recent international experience conducting research and cancer clinical trials.

Andrew is skilled at tailoring your oncology treatment plan to align with personal hopes and expectations. Recent experience at Harvard Cancer Centre (Dana Farber) with world leading clinicians and researchers allows his clinical care to be supported by an in-depth knowledge of contemporary personalised medicine and immunotherapy. Ongoing research collaboration with colleagues in United States continually delivers timely access to new developments in cancer medicine.

His passion for improving the clinical care of cancer patients began while working as an Oncology Pharmacist. A Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery was awarded from the University of Queensland in 2010 followed by Post-graduate training in Medical Oncology across Queensland. He was awarded a Fellowship with the Royal Australasian College of Physicians in Medical Oncology in 2017. A special interest in clinical trials was then developed working at Olivia Newton John Cancer Wellness and Research Centre in Melbourne (2018) focusing on urologic, head and neck and brain cancers.

His career continued at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute in Boston, Massachusetts including extensive work researching urologic tumours and Coronavirus disease 2019. His research portfolio includes numerous peer-reviewed publications in leading scientific and clinical journals.

Dr Andrew Schmidt

Dr Jason Conn is a clinical and laboratory haematologist practicing at Coastal Cancer Care with the Sunshine Coast University Private Hospital, and also holds a staff specialist position at the Sunshine Coast University Hospital. He has a broad range of experience in managing patients with both malignant and non-malignant haematologic disorders, including lymphoma, myeloma, leukaemia, and thrombosis/haemostasis.

Dr Conn completed his Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) degree with James Cook University in 2013. Haematology and laboratory specialist training was undertaken within the tertiary teaching institutions of the Princess Alexandra Hospital and Royal Brisbane & Women’s Hospital. Through these centres, Dr Conn was able to gain valuable experience with clinical trials and translational research; he has published peer-reviewed articles in several prominent cancer journals, both as lead author and in close collaboration with interstate and international researchers. He also maintains a strong teaching and mentorship focus via his affiliation with the University of Queensland’s School of Medicine as an Associate Lecturer.

Dr Conn is a fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (FRACP) and Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia (FRCPA). He is also a member of several leading cancer trial and research groups including the Australasian Leukaemia & Lymphoma Group (ALLG), American Society of Haematology (ASH) and Haematology Society of Australia and New Zealand (HSANZ). Dr Conn is also currently completing further post-graduate study through the University of Newcastle to become a Master of Clinical Epidemiology – this will improve access to clinical trials for haematology patients living in the Sunshine Coast region.
